Installing ARCH GNU/Linux - Part 1/2

Hi to everyone, in this first part I will explain how to install ARCH GNU/Linux for 64 bits from the install CD provided by the ARCH site.

ARCH GNU/Linux is not "for newbies" distribution, like Ubuntu or Mint. This distribution has the DIY (Do It Yourself) way https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way and everything we can do, we need to make it by hand. Follow this guidelines, there is no automatic installer. The installation is made from scratch, by hand. So, in this post I will expose how I made the install in order to help others to get in the ARCH experience.

Why ARCH? Well, after trying a lot of GNU/Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Slackware, OpenSUSE, Chakra) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Compared_to_Other_Distributions I think that ARCH has the better cost/benefit balance. One of the key things for me is the speed. If the distribution is not fast, I will never like it. Another thing that let me choose ARCH, is KDE, my desktop manager by excellence. With Ubuntu KDE works bad or very slow, so I have tried also Chakra, but this can't fill my extreme expectations. So, I have tried with ARCH with KDE and I'm very happy right now.

Lista de consejos para poder tener configurado un sistema mas o menos bien, no hace falta instalar todo lo que dice aquí, sólo instale lo de su preferencia.


Iniciar con el teclado numérico activado:

pacman -S numlockx 

luego agregar "numlockx on" en /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup

Para el KDE: (yo lo uso en inglés) System Settings, ir a Hardware/Input Devices/Keyboard y ahi vamos a ver una opcion para controlar el comportamiento del NumLock.

Si actualizo el kdm, me pisa la configuración, asi que hago

nano /etc/pacman.conf

y pongo NoUpgrade = usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup

Hola a todos! En este post voy a explicar como instalar ARCH GNU/Linux para 64 bits (en mi caso) desde el CD de instalación que provee la página.

ARCH GNU/Linux no es una distribución para usuarios nuevos en el mundo de GNU/Linux, como lo puede ser Ubuntu, o Mint. Ésta distribución tiene una mentalidad HUM (Hágalo Usted Mismo) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way_(Español) y cada cosa que se requiere hacer, la tenemos que hacer a mano. Siguiendo con este lineamiento, no hay instalador. Uno tiene que instalar su ARCH a mano, desde cero. Así que en este post voy a poner una guía que armé mientras lo instalaba para ayudar a otros a que también se sumen a la experiencia ARCH.

¿Por qué ARCH? Bueno, luego de probar varias distribuciones GNU/Linux, (Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Slackware, OpenSUSE, Chakra) https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Compared_to_Other_Distributions_(Español) me pareció que la que balanceaba mejor la relación costo/beneficio era ARCH. Una de las cosas que para mi gusto son claves es una distribución es la velocidad. Si no es veloz, ya nunca va a tener mi visto bueno. Otra cosa que me llevó a instalar esta distribución, es que mi escritorio de preferencia por lejos es KDE, y con Ubuntu no sólo funciona mal sino que funciona lento. Luego probé chakra pero no me terminó de convencer, asi que probé ARCH con KDE y no me muevo más.
